Wine Transportation Tips
Whether transporting from the port or vineyard, hauling wine as a commodity has specific rules and risks. Understanding these can prevent your claim from being denied in the event of a loss.
Considerations
Firstly, wine is a delicate product and requires knowledgeable carriers to transport it. There are many costs when it comes to producing and transporting wine. If improperly handled, the wine can spoil, or the bottles can break, costing the shippers and carriers money.
Most often, wine is shipped already bottled. Although it is not typical for carriers to hold the task of packaging, things to remember include:
- • Providing appropriate cushioning to reduce any roughness the product may experience while on the road (i.e., Styrofoam boxes, bubble wrap, etc.)
- • Keep the temperature consistent with minimal variation. The temperature ideally ranges between 55 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit.
- • Refrain from significant exposure to light. Alcohol products are subject to chemical changes when exposed for long periods. Light can affect the taste and freshness of the wine.
Way to Transport Wine
According to Kan-Haul, “There are now several options available to wine shippers, including traditional bottle shipping, flexitanks, and ISO tanks.” They continue by explaining the differences between these methods and the pros and cons of each:
Bottle Transport
Although this is the most common form of transportation, there are still limitations.
Pros:
- • Wine is at low risk of contamination
- • Shelf-Ready immediately upon arrival
Cons:
- • Wine bottles can break easily
- • Requires extra packing materials to prevent breakage
- • Increases shipping weight dramatically, resulting in higher cost
- • Temperature control is often absent using this method
ISO Tank Hauler
Per the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the ISO tanks are hollow and comprised of stainless steel. ISO tanks are a safe and reliable option for those hauling in bulk.
Pros:
- • Refrigerated Storage Available
- • Safe & Reliable
- • Suitable for large volumes
Cons:
- • Requires additional bottling or packaging before sale to a consumer
- • Oxidation or contamination can occur if tanks are not cared for properly.
Flexitanks
Flexitanks incorporate a box trailer filled with large bags or bladders.
Pros:
- • Safest & most reliable method of wine transport
- • Different sizes available up to 24,000 liters to fit various shipping volumes
- • Minimal contamination risk
- • Can haul more per truck than pre-packaged wine
Cons:
- • Requires additional bottling or packaging before sale to a consumer
- • Temperature Control is more difficult without a refrigerated carrier
