CVSA INTERNATIONAL ROADCHECK 2026: WHAT EVERY TRUCKER NEEDS TO KNOW BEFORE MAY 12
The annual 72-hour inspection blitz is almost here. Here’s how to get through it without getting parked.
If you’re a commercial truck driver, you already know about the International Roadcheck— but in case this is your first time hearing about it, here’s the short version: it’s the biggest commercial vehicle inspection event in North America, and it’s happening May 12-14, 2026
For 72 straight hours, law enforcement officers across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico will be pulling trucks over at weigh stations, inspection sites, and pop-up checkpoints. The goal is simple: make sure trucks are safe, and drivers are compliant.
This year, inspectors have two specific areas they’re paying extra attention to: cargo securement and ELD (electronic logging device) tampering. Read on to find out exactly what that means for you and what you can do right now to make sure you roll through without violation.
WHAT IS INTERNATIONAL ROADCHECK?
International Roadcheck is organized by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) and has been running since 1988. It’s not just a U.S. thing; inspectors from Canada and Mexico participate too. This makes it the largest targeted enforcement program for commercial vehicles in the world.
Nearly 15 trucks and motorcoaches are inspected every minute during the 72-hour event. Since 1988, more than 1.8 million roadside inspections have been conducted during International Roadcheck (CVSA).
Most inspections conducted during Roadcheck are North American Standard Level I Inspections, a 37-step procedure that looks at two main things:
- The driver (your credentials, logbook, medical card, seat belt, and Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse status)
- The vehicle (brakes, tires, lights, cargo securement, and overall mechanical condition)
Inspectors may also conduct Level II (walk-around without going under the truck), Level III (driver-only), or Level V (vehicle-only) inspections depending on the situation.
THE 2026 FOCUS AREAS
Every year, CVSA picks one driver issue and one vehicle issue to spotlight. Here’s what’s on the radar for 2026:
1. ELD TAMPERING, FALSIFICATION, OR MANIPULATION (DRIVER FOCUS)
This is a big one. Inspectors will be looking hard at your electronic logging device records for anything that looks off. That could be false entries, manipulated driving time, or signs that the ELD itself has been messed with.
Here’s the thing: sometimes bad ELD entries happen by accident because a driver misunderstands the rules. But inspectors will also be on the lookout for intentional falsification. Specifically, records that have been changed to hide hours-of-service (HOS)
2. Cargo Securement (Vehicle Focus)
Unsecured or poorly secured cargo is a serious safety hazard — not just for you, but for every driver on the road around you. Loads that shift or fall off can cause crashes in an instant.
In 2025, over 18,000 violations were issued for cargo not being secured to prevent leaking, spilling, blowing, or falling. More than 16,000 were issued for unsecured vehicle components or dunnage. (CVSA)
Inspectors will be checking that your load is properly tied down, blocked, braced or covered. Pay special attention to:
- Are they the right rating for your load weight?
- Is everything keeping the load from shifting?
- Is anything at risk of blowing off?
- Are any loose parts, tools, or equipment properly secured?
Take an extra walk around your trailer before every run this week. A few extra minutes now can save you hours parked on the side of the road.
WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU’RE PLACED OUT OF SERVICE?
An out-of-service (OOS) order means you’re not going anywhere until the violation is fixed. In 2025, the vehicle OOS rate was 18.1%, and the driver OOS rate was 5.9%. This means roughly 1 in 5 vehicles and about 1 in 17 drivers were pulled out of service.
The good news? The majority of drivers pass. In 2025, 94.1% of drivers and 81.6% of vehicles inspected had no OOS violations. (CVSA Roadcheck 2025 Results)
A clean inspection earns a CVSA decal on your truck, a visible sign to inspectors that your rig has already passed a rigorous check. That’s a good thing to have on your side.
YOUR PRE-ROADCHECK CHECKLIST
Use this checklist to prep before May 12:
Driver Documents & Compliance
- CDL is valid and with you

- Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse status is clear
- Seat belt is in working order — wear it, always
Vehicle & Cargo
- Brakes are adjusted and functioning properly
- Tires meet FMCSA tread depth minimums (4/32″ steer, 2/32″ others) and have no visible damage
- Lights — headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals — all working
- Cargo is properly secured per FMCSA securement rules
- Tie-downs are the right rating for your load
- No loose vehicle components, tools, or dunnage
- Tarps and covers are secured and won’t come loose
DON’T FORGET: OTHER CVSA EVENTS IN 2026
Roadcheck is just one of several enforcement campaigns throughout the year. Here’s what else is coming:
- Expected July 12–18, 2026 (focuses on risky driving behaviors for both commercial and passenger vehicles)
- August 23–29, 2026 (brake system condition and maintenance)
- One day, no prior notice, sometime in 2026
Compliance isn’t just a once-a-year thing. The carriers and drivers who do best are the ones who stay sharp all year long.

International Roadcheck isn’t something to dread; it’s a chance to prove that you’re operating safely and professionally. The drivers and fleets that prepare, check their equipment regularly, and keep their paperwork tight are the ones who roll through without a hitch.
